8 Benefits of Bamboo Cutting Boards

Posted on August 02 2021

You’ve probably heard of at least one person who claims to have been using the same bamboo cutting board for the past thirty years and swears they’ll never own anything else. They really love it! Bamboo cutting boards will last a lifetime with the proper care, but that’s only one of the reasons why people love them so much. There are plenty of benefits to owning a bamboo cutting board, but we’ll start with the top eight.

1. They’re Beautiful

Bamboo is a naturally light-colored wood with a fine grain. Many people love the added touch of style it brings to their kitchen, and the natural color of bamboo is sure to match any décor. Bamboo is also able to resist staining from foods like meat or tomatoes, preserving the naturally beautiful color.

Some bamboo cutting boards even come in fun shapes or with unique designs. Our Pineapple Shaped Cutting Board is a great example of how beautiful bamboo can be. The “crown” of the pineapple-shaped board is crafted with a light, natural colored bamboo while the rest of the board features a rich caramelized bamboo. The two-tone design is classic, stylish and proves that cutting boards don’t have to look boring.

2. They’re Durable

Bamboo is more durable than most hard woods or plastics and has a tensile strength similar to that of steel! This allows bamboo cutting boards to be more resistant to scratches and nicks during use. It’s the perfect material for cutting, chopping, slicing and dicing. It’s strong enough to hold up to years of use; with the proper care, they’ll last a long time!

3. They’re Gentle on Knives

A sharp knife is one of the best tools a chef can own. We think a bamboo cutting board should be right beside it. Bamboo is a dense material that is strong enough to resist scarring from knives and holds up well to your heavy-duty chopping tasks. At the same time, bamboo is gentle on knives, allowing them to remain sharp for continued use. Just remember to be careful with those sharp knives!

4. Bamboo is Light Weight

You’re probably not going to throw your bamboo cutting board around like a frisbee, but they are still light weight enough to handle easily. In comparison to other popular cutting board woods, like maple, bamboo weighs less. This makes bamboo a great material for oversized cutting boards, like our Big Easy Chopping Block. The Big Easy measures a whopping 19” by 13-1/2”, offers over 250 square inches of cutting space and is still easy to move.

5. Bamboo is Water Resistant

Bamboo cutting boards are non-porous and don’t absorb water easily. Compared to other wooden cutting boards, they’re less likely to warp and crack. However, we still advise against soaking your bamboo cutting boards or putting them in the dishwasher.

If you’re looking for an awesome cutting board that can be cleaned in the dishwasher, our GreenLite™ Dishwasher-Safe Cutting Boards are an excellent choice! Our GreenLite™ line of bamboo cutting boards are uniquely designed with dishwasher-safe properties to make clean up even easier.

6. They’re Easy to Care for

Since bamboo doesn’t easily absorb moisture or odors from your foods, they’re very easy to clean. After use, simply hand wash your board with soap and hot water. (We’re not kidding, it really is that simple!)

To extend the life of your bamboo cutting board, we recommend occasionally applying mineral oil to the surface. Mineral oil is effective at restoring, protecting and maintaining bamboo cutting boards. Our Revitalizing Mineral Oil is a bamboo cutting board’s best friend!

7. Bamboo is Better for the Environment

Bamboo is a sustainable, natural resource. It's grown without pesticides, artificial irrigation or chemical fertilizers, even on difficult terrain. After harvest, its root system remains in place and helps to prevent soil erosion. Since bamboo is a grass, it quickly regrows after harvest and can grow up to 3 feet in a single day!

Thanks to the eco-friendly nature of bamboo, bamboo cutting boards are a very popular kitchen product. Why stop with just cutting boards though? We offer a variety of functional kitchen products using this amazing material, and the Moso bamboo used is not a part of the panda's diet or habitat.
