Why Bamboo Is Better for You and the Planet (and Belongs in Your Kitchen)

Earth Day is a reminder that small choices can add up over time. In the kitchen, sometimes it starts with something simple, like the materials we use every day. At Totally Bamboo, that idea has been part of our story from the beginning. We introduced the world’s first bamboo cutting board with a simple goal: create something that works beautifully in the kitchen while being thoughtful about the material behind it. Because the moments around the table matter, and the products we use to get there should too.

What Makes Bamboo So Unique

Bamboo has always been at the heart of our story. It regenerates from its own root system after harvest, so it grows back quickly without needing to be replanted. This natural cycle, combined with its ability to quickly grow without artificial irrigation, pesticides, or fertilizers, makes bamboo a highly efficient resource. Over the time it takes most hardwood trees to mature, bamboo can be harvested up to 14 times.

A few reasons bamboo stands apart:

  • Rapidly renewable: Bamboo can grow up to 3 feet per day, and it can produce up to 14 harvests of bamboo in the amount of time it takes most hardwood trees to grow to maturity
  • Low-impact growing: It doesn’t require artificial irrigation, pesticides, or fertilizers
  • Naturally efficient: Bamboo absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen at a high rate

Together, these qualities are what make it such a thoughtful material— one that works with nature, not against it. In the kitchen, our bamboo pieces fit easily into everyday routines, whether you’re slicing ingredients on a cutting board, building a charcuterie spread, or keeping salt within reach.

Thoughtful by Nature, Made for Everyday Use

Sustainability shows up in both the materials we choose and how we use them. That’s part of what makes bamboo such a natural fit in the kitchen. Our kitchen goods crafted from this material are lightweight, easy to use, and fit seamlessly into everyday moments. From prepping ingredients to setting out a delicious meal to share, it’s a material you can easily incorporate into your routine. But the impact goes beyond the material itself— it’s also in how we care for it to help it last over time.

Choosing materials like bamboo is a simple way to show a little more thought in the kitchen: Taking a moment to hand wash, allowing it to fully dry, and oiling it now and then. Small habits help it last longer and keep it in your routine.

These aren’t big changes. Just small, consistent choices— and that is where it all starts. Not with overhauling everything at once, but with simple actions that feel natural over time; Because when something is made to last and cared for along the way, it becomes part of your everyday in a way that matters.

Taking It a Step Further with ClimatePartner

We’ve partnered with ClimatePartner to measure and certify the carbon footprint of select Totally Bamboo products. This certification process helps us better understand our environmental footprint and take clear, measurable steps toward reducing it, with transparency you can actually see.

That includes:

  • Measuring emissions across a product’s full life cycle, from raw materials through the end of life
  • Setting reduction targets and reviewing progress each year
  • Supporting verified climate projects for emissions that can’t yet be avoided

Currently, ClimatePartner certification applies to select items, including our:

These products also support the Improved Cookstoves Worldwide project. This initiative helps provide more efficient cookstoves to communities across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These cookstoves use less firewood, which helps reduce emissions while also improving indoor air quality and everyday cooking conditions.

Making Progress, Every Day

The way we think about our products has always been shaped by the materials behind them and how they’re used every day.

ClimatePartner certification is one more way we’re continuing to build on that with care and intention.

This Earth Day, and every day, we are grateful to be part of your kitchen and the small, thoughtful choices that happen there.
