The story of Totally Bamboo began in the land of stories… well, just north of it.

Tom and Joanne Sullivan owned Hollywood Chairs in North Hollywood, supplying director’s chairs to top movie and television productions. In a quest to improve upon their famously comfortable foldable chairs, the Sullivans began experimenting with other material options. They wanted something lighter than their existing oak chairs yet strong enough to last through the production of a blockbuster picture (and its inevitable sequels).

After exhaustive research, they found one material fit the bill better than any other— bamboo!

Bamboo has a higher tensile strength than steel yet is light enough for anyone to easily carry. Not only is bamboo a better material option, but it’s better for the planet too. Despite its tough exterior, bamboo is actually a grass. When harvested the roots remain and quickly regenerate. It’s a truly remarkable and renewable resource.

Finding an innovative new use for bamboo.

Our first bamboo cutting boards came from scraps from our director's chairs. Initally they were made as Christmas gifts for friends and family. On a lark, we brought them to an art show we were exhibiting in. We were stunned when they sold out in minutes. Joanne looked at Tom and said "this is our new product" and Totally Bamboo was born!

Totally Bamboo has continued to innovate since those first the bamboo cutting boards. Starting with our Hawaiian Collection Cutting Boards, Totally Bamboo also since created:

These innovations and more have led to Totally Bamboo’s current lineup of masterfully crafted cutting boards, beautifully designed bowls, clever utensils and smart storage solutions.

In addition to bamboo, Totally Bamboo has also branched out into other natural materials in our Rock & Branch®, Baltique® and TB Home® product lines.

Totally Bamboo products are designed in their California headquarters and shipped and serviced from their distribution center in Texas.
